is this a caldera system, and do you have the antialiased fonts set?
if so, the best [imho] fix is to remove the adobeserif and adobesansserif
fonts from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 and rerun your xft config
program [i don't remember what X 4.0.2 uses, but 4.1.0 uses xftcache].
restart X and choose normal fonts in the kde control center.
