I think the main point about these suggestions that I followed was to 
back up and clean out /opt/kde2, /usr/lib/qt2 and ~/.kde2 in your home 
directory.  I like to back up in /usr/local.  I use midnight commander 
to do this so as to preserve ownership.  Then I compiled the source, 
picking up the various libs that akar mentions toward the bottom of his 
list of suggestions.    I did not perform many of the more exotic 
things that akar recommended for speed-up, but my compile went in with 
no errors.  I also don't remember if akar mentioned it, but you also 
need the latest qt-2.3.1 I think is the number.  See the kde site.  
You'lll need to get the source from trolltech;  I would be skeptical 
about trying the Caldera qt-2 rpms.  I had very good luck with 
compiling the trolltech source.
