No workaround should be needed for any version of VMWare at the 3.x level. The work around mentioned was for people running 2.0.x versions of VMware when they wanted to run 2.4.7 or greater kernels. A small piece of new source was needed and it was readily available. I still have it but you shouldn't need it.
