Ah, thanks Chris, you helped me dredge my memory on why I gave up.
I too had issues getting the image on the CF card working.
I had got to the point where I was going to hook up a Cdrom drive to the 
ISA bus (making an adaptor) upon where I ran out of interest. ;-)
Will try again sometime soon with the latest version of pfsense.
