I knew about this for some time, still not included here: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/Supported_USB-Devices Oh well, all data is restored from it except that single file - I was lucky. Having spent too much time with it and being clear the disk is on its way out of this plane of existence, with the risk of appearing less than competent, I'll leave it to its own devices (!).
