Actually, if you've been following since Firefox 5, they've been
progressively shrinking their memory footprint.

I've seen clean installs running with only 70m memory usage, I kid not.

Checkout the new "about:memory" page some time, lets you see exactly
where its getting spent.

The lions share is javascript, which means : A) Addon Scripting and B)
Bloaty pages like facebook.

( Facebook is literally my biggest memory hog at 80Mg of JS on its own )

I found this to be a symptom of having an old profile left around full
of cruft. Somehow removing addons doesn't remove the cruft they bring.

Try this: Create a new profile, install the same addons. You'll likely
find it much faster ( additionally so, because the history .sqlite is
now empty too )

Gentoo 64bit, a measly 4G of ram, an intel i5, heaps of disk, and
*35* addons installed. Stock builds from nightly.

Addons I recommend most:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cam/ # "Cleanest Addon
Manager" because the default one is bloated like a whale

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fasterfox-9148/ # Fasterfox Lite

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fvd-speed-dial/ # FVD
Speed Dial ( The stock one sucks, seriously )

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/geolocater/?src=api #
Set your location without a GPS to trick "location aware" pages

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/html-notifications/ #
Supported by GMail HTML5 notifications API for desktop notifications
on new mail

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/omnibar/ # Omnibar, cos
why waste screen with address/search when one bar can do both jobs

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/?src=api
# Tidy up those sqlite databases ;)

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/restartless-restart/ #
easy way for a quick restart button

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/textarea-cache/ #
remembers what you typed recently so you don't lose that forum post
because of a website sucking
