I recommend having a look at Cinnamon - created by Linuxmint to give
a Gnome 2 look to Gnome 3. Works on Ubuntu too.

Cinnamon leaked memory like a firehose for me. Less than ideal when
the desktop was inside a yellow stickered building and I was working
remotely....
I have ended up with a minimal xfce setup... window managers should get
out of the way and manage windows, not be an entire UI.
And at home its twm. Yes, a window manager from 1987.
