If you can't get an N900 or N950 perhaps an N9 ??

but if all you want is a smartphone with an SSH client .. any Symbian S60 or S^3 (eg N8) will happily run putty

Cheers

I'm considering getting a smartphone to replace my netbook, as I think
it will better suit my out-and-about needs. I just want to be able to
browse the web and check my email (not that I can afford anything much
more capable, anyway). But I would like something that's somewhat
hackable or at least be able to SSH from, and that I can be fairly
confident is not phoning home all my private information (the OS, not
any given app). From what little I know of the market, Android seems to
be the best choice for this.

So, any recommendations or advice?

You're asking for polar opposites.

Cellphones are inherently closed, mostly due to FCC-style regulations. A cellphone has to be tested to conform to "does not transmit above certain levels" etc.

Then again a true Open Source zealot has this to say:

Basically find a cell phone with a data connection and a working SSH client, and be happy.

iphones are very pretty but they're the ultimate closed environment. However the apps all work together properly.
android is more wild-west, where apps may or may not do what you want.

Neither platform is totally trustworthy.

Personally, I have a work iphone and an old nokia 6310 for non-work use. They're tools, not an end-purpose. Just my 2c.
