Yes, that's the other half of the problem.

Precisely, although, to be fair, he wouldn't have a clue how else to set
up a VPN, and it's a home server without a static IP.

He's not forcing me to use Hamachi; Hamachi's proprietary protocol is by
being incompatible with anything else.

There's a big difference between security conscious and paranoid.  We
shouldn't trust something just because it's from a large company with
something to lose.  (Remember the Sony rootkit?)  But that's not the
same as "ZOMG THE GOVERNMENT IS TRYING TO GET INSIDE MY COMPUTER AND MY
HEAD!!11!"
