What I prefer to do is set up the machine to dual boot, install virtual box under Linux, then run the installed windows with virtual box under Linux direct from its partition. I've found performance on multi core machines much better that way around.

I believe there is a method by which one can install Ubuntu so it uses a huge file in the windows NTFS file system to hold the entire Linux file system.
