Yeah - the problem with free wireless is that it often gets locked down to

https to any PASS
DNS to the servers listed in your DHCP reply PASS
then DENY all

So telecom free wireless hotspots are like this, as are some number of Zenbu APs.

FYI Koru Club wireless works perfectly - any kind of VPN should work fine from their sites.

Some other sites require you to accept an EULA via a http captive portal, and only then is traffic allowed.



Another option is to pair your laptop to a data capable cell phone and use cellular internet - make sure you're on the internet APN not any kind of walled-garden access and you're off. Downside is cost, but plans are getting better all the time. My 12 year old nokia does 9600 GPRS perfectly, and while its slow it does work.
