Filling up the root partition is not easy to fix.
Why? Unless you made some really silly use of mount points and raync
target directories, all the stuff is in a single directory, just on the
wrong disk. Delete that nad you're running again, so maybe you want to
restart a few services.
Btw I can really only recommend to use rsnapshot, it has too many
advantages. It would probably have errored out on this one as a sdide
effect.

There are myriad pitfalls with a full root partition. That's why
programs like vipw were created, for example. The alternative is really,
really painful.
My fave backup is really oldschool... snapback2 - similar idea to
rsnapshot. A really simple and space-effective method of keeping
incremental backups without the pain of sticking them all back together
if you need them...
