So what other "cloud" backup/sync/sharing services are folks using? I
have ~30GB of data I like to have backed up; many services seem to
want > USD$100 per annum to provide a sync service for that much data.

Can you not use S3fs to mount Amazon buckets? The only shortcoming is it
doesn't support hard links, so some of the clever space saving rsync
solutions won't work.
None of the NZ based VPSes will provide anything like the space you need
for that kind of cost. It may be worth looking for a group buy and
running something like opencloud between yourselves - perfectly safe and
separate. For example, I have had a server in Canada which provides me
with 1TB for $20/mo - but that is an *extra* $20... you can have that
much space via sftp for nowt if it's any use!
