Alsamixer from terminal only mirrors pavucontrol. The webcam 'card' has
only one Capture control and muting/unmuting it or changing the volume
levels in say alsamixer reflects the changes in real time in pavucontrol
and the other way around. No matter how I play with it I get no sound. I
use guvcview for testing.

What exactly should I look for in /dev/snd* ?
