Turns out that Mozilla Thunderbird on Ubuntu 14.04 depends on nscd to

Otherwise it keeps coming up with the Thunderbird Crash Reporter over

The only clue was "Segmentation Fault" segfault when running from
command prompt.
thunderbird -safe-mode did nothing different, still came up
with Crash Reporter repeatedly.
Posting for future reference and for search engines to index.
what about later versions Craig?
Dunno - I've simply reported a data point that may be useful for people
randomly googling in the future.
That was Thunderbird 31.7.0 but I bet its the same in a lot of versions.
Nothing bugs me more than "I have a problem" then later "don't worry I
fixed it" with no explanation.
