Yeah. DDG's search results are basically Bing + Custom filters.
DDG attempt to "block" known spurious results if you report them as
"Bad relevancy", and may filter out spamdomains if you report them in
the listings.
But DDG does not serve as a very good search engine for generalized
queries. It was much better when the search provider under the hood
was google, where it was then better than google, but its just not as
good with Bing.
DDG is better when:
1. You have technical questions it has custom indexes for which get
prioritized due to the indexes existence.
2. You have particular questions that can be answered in a short
response ( "Instant Answers" )
3. Or you need a one-stop-gateway to all the different searches of the internet.
#3 is pretty much why I have it as my default.
It means I don't need to set up custom shortcuts for hundreds of
different search engines I might need to use and I can just use them
all from my address bar.
!g search here # all I need to do to perform a google search
# instead of DDG ( and uses better security
# defaults than googles home page! )
!gi search here # google images search
!amo search here # search mozilla addons
!mcpan search here # search metacpan.org
!tr word # run google translate on "word"
!w word # wikipedia "word"
!wikt # wiktionary "word"
!gm Address # open google maps at address
!trademe search # search trademe for search
But I really use "!g" more than I wish I had to. :/
