FWIW, I have been using a Dell XPS13 as my main work computer after
considering Acer, Lenovo, HP and Toshiba alternatives. I did have pretty
high performance requirements, together with tight portability, so that
the options were somewhat limited. And I need a good screen with as much
vertical pixel resolution as I can get, as much of my work is dealing
with documents that are portrait-format (bit of a challenge these days
when everything entertainment wide-screen...). Acer at the time only
were going up to 4GB RAM, which wasn't enough. Lenovo didn't budge on
their (high) pricing, Toshiba had an optical drive that I didn't need
(and didn't want the extra weight). And I don't remember what was wrong
with the HP offering, probably the weight-to-performance ratio, or maybe
the price.
I am running Windows 7 as host OS on the XPS13, as that happens to be
our desktop OS at work, but I've got a couple of Linux VMs on it that I
use for all these jobs Windows isn't really that great at, and it works
like a charm.
Footprint - you've got the dimensions already, but if it's any help I
commute by bike and have no trouble sticking the computer with the
original Dell leather sleeve (not included) into my backpack.
I was also positively impressed with the very affordable travel adapter
from Dell, which from memory may have been just under $ 30 NZD incl.
shipping and is rather ingeniously designed to allow you to wrap the DC
cable around itself for stowing, and the mains cable is very short,
which keeps the overall weight at a minimum. And I've got one of these
USB-3-connected docking stations that makes connecting another couple of
monitors straightforward.
So far I've never looked back and am very happy with it in terms of
usability, ergonomics, reliability, performance, etc. - the only thing I
am sometimes missing is an SD card slot, not too much of an issue though...
Kind regards,
Helmut.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's the overall dimensions I am bothered

Lenovo X220 is now an X250. Might be worth looking at, thanks. Still
big, but better than a tablet. I have also identified the Dell XPS13,
but they have temporarily stopped selling it with Ubuntu.
