My favourite tool for wrangling LaTeX is the KDE application Kile. It has tab completion built-in templates syntax highlighting and contextual help.
My work flow is create the LaTeX source in the Kile editor, then CTRL + S to save changes and then ALT + 2 to run the LaTeX executable. A bonus is if you have the output DVI file open in Okular it will automaticly update your changes. I use the article document class and Kile as a tool to generate customer contracts.
