The present bug in acroread 5 under UTF-8 locales is not fixed by
LC_NUMERIC=C. There was an independent bug in acroread 4 where
LC_NUMERIC=de_DE caused problems with some PDF documents, which I
suspect might be what you refer to. I reported that LC_NUMERIC bug in
Oct 2001 and it got indeed fixed in acroread 5.
