Mike,

I tried your tip to bring up kinput2 but it doesn't
seem to work in either UTF-8 locale (en_US.UTF-8 or
ja_JP.UTF-8). It just had no resonse when trying
to convert. I checked that cannaserver and kinput2
were running and everything else seems to be correct.
What seems to be the problem?
I have the full CJK environment/components setup.
It worked fine under ja_JP.

Thanks,
Jim

First of all you should probably use en_US.UTF-8 because although
glibc doesn't care for case and hyphens in the encoding, X11 does and
unless an alias is defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias,
X11 applications won't work correctly with en_US.utf8.

Let's assume you use kinput2 for example.

It should work if you use

export XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2"
LANG=ja_JP LC_ALL=ja_JP kinput2 -xim -kinput -canna &
LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 program-where-you-want-to-input Japanese

I.e. you only need to set LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.eucJP *or* ja_JP.UTF-8 to
indicate that you want to use a Japanese XIM input server. You can
set the other LC_* variables and LANG differently if you like, for
example if you prefer English messages.

And you should probably better start the kinput2 server itself in
ja_JP.eucJP locale. But that doesn't mean that the client program
where you want to input Japanese also has to run in ja_JP.eucJP, you
can just as well run the client with LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8.
