I think -8 mode is the most important, because it is much more widely
used than -u8 and runs with much less resources. If -lc mode will be
the default, I think the command option "-8" must not be removed.
I think -en is also a good command option. The reason is just
same as the reason you said above why -u8 is needed. Rather, -u8
can be removed because it is same as "-en UTF-8". Ok, I don't really
insist to remove it. I just wanted to say the importance of -en
option.

Though I don't know about XFontStruct internal, it is not a good idea
to restrict fonts to iso10646, because non-ISO-8859-1 people may want
to use xterm with 8bit (-8) mode with their favorite fonts with
non-internationalized OS or machines with limited memory and disk.
However, yes, in 16bit (-u8, -lc, and -en) modes, it is a good idea
to restrict fonts to iso10646. Using xterm in 16bit modes with
non-iso10646 fonts is a confused idea. And, I agree -lc mode is
the best choice for default mode.
BTW, we once discussed about on-demand font loading, to have doublewidth
fonts by default but not to force loading doublewidth fonts to those
who don't need them (not yet implemented). Does the "Keith's client
side font library" solve this problem and make the on-demand font
loading needless?
