I just found out that gnome-terminal have been supporting UTF-8 for a long
time. Unfortunately you need to send 'ESC%G' to activate it, which is not
as strightforward as I would like it to be. So i patched gnome-libs to read
nl_langinfo(CODESET). The patch along with prebuilt rpms for helix-gnome
redhat-7.1 is available from http://noa.tm/utf-8/. I've submitted the patch
to the gnome-libs maintainers for inclusion, if anyone is interested
submission can be followed here:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55112

I don't know how complete or working the UTF-8 support is in
gnome-terminal, but it passes my very basic 'echo > filen.txt' test.

cheers
/Daniel
