As I noted some weeks ago, I wasn't able to use the clipboard for kde to copy/paste double-byte characters.
How about gnome on RH8? I see that there is gcm and the bonobo-clipboard, but haven't seen any docs about i18n. Do either of these or any other apps handle more than ascii?
