This probably happens not only with double-byte but with 
anything that is not straight ascii, much of the stuff here, 
for example:

It is not a matter of the cut/paste of such strings, per se. 
It is something that concerns the clipboard (that of KDE) 
which saves five or six strings. One can then go back a number 
of "cuts" earlier, retrieve that string, and then paste it. 
But, at least on RH7.1, this clipboard munged strings that 
were not straight ascii. 
Would be great to have a clipboard for gnome or kde that didn't 
have those strings for lunch.
