I've been using an OE based rootfs from the beginning. I added an image called
imote2-image to OE with the needed tools directly inside the image.

Most of the time I used a kernel compiled by hand. Easier for development.
Jonathon asked me if I could provide an image and a kernel build by OE for
people to test out. I think I can do this next week.

Never done that by hand. Sometimes I tested natively on my host and for cross
compilation I used OE.

It's a small microcontroller based device that runs contiki and uses a CC2420 as
well. A co-worker is working with them and prepared me one which send all
packets it receives over a serial link to a linux host and feeds them into
wireshark.
