Yes, it's easy to flash/erase over the USB interface:

The pre-burned serial firmware option is just an easy way for people
to get started working at the serial command level without having to
setup the econotag dev. etc... (e.g. people who want to use kismet to
sniff 802.15.4 can just buy the econotag with the firmware burned and
set a config option in kismet)
