I threw out my Nvidia and got ATI to avoid messing with Nvidia's drivers. You can probably run Nouveau on your Nvidia and just lose 3D support while that kernel is booted. http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/ This is mess is a problem caused by Nvidia's policies and has nothing to do with normal use of Linux.
