Try removing the .Xdefaults file (or renaming it just as a test) and then
running xt5250.  In the default installation, xt5250 uses keyboard mapping
from $PREFIX/share/tn5250/XTerm  (Replace $PREFIX with either / or
/usr/local, or whatever you configured when you installed it.)

If you use an .Xdefaults file, then all of the function keys have to be
programmed into it.  (You can simply copy the config from the
aforementioned XTerm file)

Try specifying -underscores  (or if that doesn't work, try +underscores)
in your ~/.tn5250rc file.

I'm not familiar with Gentoo... but if you're running XFree86 on it, then
I would expect that my advice above would apply.  Otherwise, maybe someone
running Gentoo can help?
