You are right, they aren't really arbitrary, they are application specific. We have several PC tie ins for our AS/400 software. One example is a picture manager: our AS/400 software tracks real estate for government, so in order to be able to view and manipulate pictures we wrote software that an RPG program calls (currently via STRPCCMD), passing it the necessary key information. This is done to bypass the manual searching process and let's the user procedurally link the property record on the 400 with the picture on the PC (actually on a server, but I digress...) There are several others but they all function pretty much the same. Graphically oriented functions for our non-graphic-but-beloved AS/400. I'm willing to rewrite them in Java so that they will run on Linux or Windows, but I first need to prove that it is viable and reasonable. Unfortunately, storing the Linux user profile and password is neither, which I think I would have to do with RUNRMTCMD. Oh the life of an ISV...
