Try the following  command
$dd if=/dev/zero of=junk bs=10MB count=1000 (just  wait for few minutes and  
interupt the cmdwith ^c)

It creats a file of name junk of 10GB. While this activity large CPU
and memory will be seen. check with  $top  in a different console, whether  
your swap memory is used. 

$rm -rf junk
