My advice:  Instead of using RH9, try something newer.  Fedora Core 2 is 
the newest version of Red Hat out there.   And there are many other 
distros, too.

The other advice I have is to try to disable DMA for your CD-ROM.  It is 
probably a boot/install option, though I don't know where it would be 
for your distro.  I have seen this once before.
