Really, the only thing that I think is difficult about Debian is
perhaps, the initial install.  After that, keeping it updated and
getting new packages is probably easier than it is with RedHat (but I
haven't used yum, so don't know if the frequent problems with RPMs
needing another rpm to be installed have been fixed with Yum.)

Either one will teach you these things, but both distributions have
their own way of doing it, neither of which could really be called
traditional Unix.

things, how to get something newer than the 2.2 kernel, etc.  :)
