OK.  It'll be instructive to look at the log to see what X thinks about 
those resolutions, assuming they did get written to your XF86Config 
file.  The X log should be something like /var/log/XFree86.log.  Poke 
around in there.  The X log will be long, but it's relatively readable. 
  There will be a part about 2/3 of the way through that logs X trying a 
bunch of different resolutions, and deciding which ones work.  See what 
you can find in there.
