I'm sorry I can't offer you much assistance regarding this, but one
thing that did catch my attention was your failure after copying a large
amount of data in a lengthy amount of time.
I experienced the exact same thing on a "genuine windows" network.
Trying to copy about the same amount of data from a windows server to a
W2K 1GHz workstation. After so long, it would die with the exact same
error message.
My point here is that I don't think it's completely related to your
Samba service, given that it happens on other platforms as well.
One thought (although I'm not sure it would be of much help in your
case) might be to zip the files into smaller chunks (say 10 or so files
to a zip, depending on the size), then copy those a few at a time.
I'm sure someone else with more experience in the windows environment
can shed more light on this.
