I'm running Ubuntu (Hoary) with Evolution, Sylpheed-claws and
Thunderbird e-mail clients.
Suddenly for no apparent reason, none of these clients will
download mail.
They were all working for a while.
I was using claws when it began - it started timing out trying to
connect to the pop server and sometimes, after hitting the get or get all
buttons several times it would finally connect and download.

Hadn't really used Evolution but once, but when I opened it and
tried again it also refused to connect.
I then installed Thunderbird and all was well - for a while - after
a few days it too refused to connect.

All this time I could get mail on my Win2k box using Opera's M2
client.
I went back to Hoary and set up the account in Opera and it
worked with no problem and still does today, though the others still fail
to connect.

I have another box with Hoary installed with only Evolution,
which also refuses to download mail.

The only thing in /var/log/messages that looks like it may indicate
a problem is:
"Apr 4 23:11:36 localhost kernel: checking if image is initramfs...it
isn't (ungzip failed); looks like an initrd"

This may or may not be related...
When attempting the 'reload' function in Synaptic, progress
immediately shows "Downloading file 5 of 24" and eventually gives failed
messages for warty/main/ Packages, warty-security/main/Packages,
warty/restricted Packages, warty-security/restricted Packages, etc.

Anyone have an idea what's happening?
TIA,
Curt
