All of these experiences are with hardware failure, not compatiblity.

When I was first looking into getting into Linux (Redhat 7.1, I
believe), the only ATAPI CD-ROM that they claimed they were incompatible
with was Lite-On CD-ROMs. That just screams of Lite-Ons taking
shortcuts in their hardware. I had a Lite-On just before that, and the
thing died 6 months after I bought it (using Windows).

A company I work for decided to dabble into 64 bit Linux, and, since
Tyan has a bit of a headstart in Opteron mobos, we bought three. We
ended up having to send back the board for one computer twice and
another once, and we're still living with broken onboard LAN ports.
This was under Gentoo.

I have a 3.5 GB Maxtor that still works that I bought as an upgrade for
a 486. I've had several WD drives give up the ghost in that span of
time. I can't say that WDs are the worst of the hard drive
manufacturers, but I can say that I've never been disappointed with a
Maxtor drive.
