FWIW, I have to echo what others have said.  What to purchase is REALLY up
to you.  I'd shoot for as much power as you can afford.

Much will depend on what you intend to DO with the box as well.  For
example, if you are a typical user -- word processing, surfing the 'net,
reading e-mail -- then pretty much anything from 1 GHz and up will be more
than adequate.  256M of RAM is probably the minimum I would recommend,
regardless of the application and the same goes with 40G of hard drive.

The minimum system I would assemble is around a 1.5GHz box with 512M of RAM
and an 80G hard drive.  This would be capable of servicing most users.  It
would operate very well under both Windows XP as well as Linux.  I'd also be
careful about going to new on the video card; although it would be no
problem for Windows, Linux may be a a bit more difficult to get set up on
the newer cards.
