It depends upon smb.conf (in /usr/etc or /usr/local/etc/).

You might have to add them to the samba database with smbpasswd or
pdbedit (depending upon the version of samba that you are using.)

If the security is domain or server then be sure that the two new people
have been added to the Microsoft domain.

Having been in a similar position (where someone who knew everything was
let go and suddenly it's my problem--and with no raise in
salary:) ) please let me know if this isn't clear.  From your post, I'm
not sure how familiar you are with your Linux server.  

It will depend upon where samba which is what is making the Linux shares
available to the Windows machines, is searching for authentication.
Also, let us know what version of samba you are running, if possible.
