Vector, based on Slackware, theoretically runs well on older hardware.
(I've only run it on newer things though). It's a pretty newcomer
friendly installation, nice people on their forums.
Go to www.distrowatch.com and take a look around--there are various
other distributions that also claim to run well on older hardware.
