The Linux kernel has all the officially blessed drivers for Linux.
There are a few notable drivers that people use from outside the kernel,
but the majority of them are in the kernel itself. There's a hardware
HOWTO on www.tldp.org, but I don't know how up to date it is. You might
also want to check Ubuntu's site for a hardware compatibility list.
Your USB controller will work. Depending on the model, your NIC will
likely work. Ubuntu will probably have most of the major drivers
compiled as modules (driver software that you can load while the OS is
running), so it should be essentially "plug and play".
