Yes, exactly so. The "live cd" versions of the various Linux flavours
actually do not do an install, which is what is so nice about them
for experimentation. Instead, they boot and run Linux from the CD
and don't touch your machine's hard drive. In this way you can try
a few things before commiting to a real install.
