A CRT monitor has no "color depth" per se. It can handle whatever shading comes from the video card. So the problem is likely the settings you have at 24bbp being too much for the card or possibly the monitor, and the unit is falling back to text mode (did it post a message about X failing to start normally when this happened?). In addition to the video card model that was asked earlier, it may also be helpful to get your monitor's model number to make sure you aren't exceeding the frequencies it is capable of.
