Russell,
Think about how you get around on the Internet, like <http://www.google.com/>

Since the Internet basically is *nix then it works the same. Just substitute 
your mount point for "http:/" as in "/mnt/hda1/".

Try "Basic File and Directory Navigation" at 
<http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~pmurphy/Talks/filedir/allparts.shtml>

Or Google on something like "directory navigate Linux" and try a few links.
