Understood.  Many *nix variants work that way, of course.  However, in
this context the word essential is a misnomer, since mplayer works
quite happily _without_ those codecs.  They're only essential in so far
as they're required for viewing WMV, QT and other proprietary codecs.

Not so under Mandriva, at least.  Due, no doubt, to worries about
infringing on a certain big company's IP rights.  I suspect the same
applies to some of the other "commercial" *nix distros.  You'll know,
I'm sure, that many don't include libdvdcss for similar worries about
legalities.
