Now, in this case, I'm referring to FreeBSD's mplayerplug-in port.  The
mplayer port itself doesn't install the various codecs unless specified.

However, when you choose the plugin port, which will pipe quicktime,
windows media, etc, to mplayer, then, the various codecs are listed as
dependencies.  There are limitations, as you've stated, due to
legalities,  and of course, it is an MS world.   Even Macs have trouble
playing some things.  For instance, our company designs clothes--there
was an MTV video of Alicia Keyes wearing a tshirt that we designed.  The
designers, who are on Macs, were unable to view it.  

(I'm digressing horribly here---this was more the fault of mtv.com for
only worrying about MS users.)
