IP based hosting decided what to server to you based on the IP address
to which you connected. This is readily available to the server.

With HTTP 1.1 (and in principle with a full URL in HTTP/1.0) the server
is told in the HTTP request the name of the web host desired. So instead
of deciding on the connection IP address the decision is made on the web
host name.

The advantage of the latter approach is that you can run arbitrarily
many web sites on a single IP address.

See www.apache.org (under the "http server" section) for how to do it
with Apache.
