mplayer seems to be the most performant of all - used to play dvd's nice and
smooth on my old computer where all others would display a twitching and
jerking image. The graphical interface (gmplayer) isn't all that good, though
- doing things like selecting tracks/chapters, audio tracks or subtitles
requires too much navigation and clicking, and the playlist editor could be
told to be plain idiotic, guaranteed not to work as you expect it to. Another
thing about it is that it sometimes manages to crash so badly that it locks the
video - but it could be a problem with my graphics chip driver.

xine is nice, seems to have gotten more performant. Should be fine for playing
dvd's, but I have the impression that mplayer can play files that xine
sometimes can't.

ogle was quite nice as I tried it (was the first one I could get to work back
then), but the development seems to have staled. You could check it out,
perhaps it works for you.

Cheers
