Just caught up with this thread.

What no one has said so far is that most distros do not ship with the ability 
to play commercial DVDs "out of the box". This is to avoid legal issues in 
certain countries.

You will have to install a package called libdvdcss. Google for a package that 
is suitable for your particular distro. This is not a player, but it will 
enable Mplayer, Ogle, Xine etc to play commercial DVD's.
