and all those who worked with me this weekend. Just thought I would
give a brief report on what happened.

I was trying to resolve two situations. The first was a Linux
replacement for my Windows 98 operating system on a desktop
computer. The second was to determine a good Linux operating system
for my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite M35 series.

To make a long story short, I gave up on the Win98 desktop. The
technology is just too old and there is not enough support to make
the conversion to any kind of Linux operating system. End of story.

However, thanks to the recommendation that I look at the laptop
website mentioned here, I gained considerable success in finding a
Linux OS for that.

Of the three I tried, Knoppix, SuSE, and Ubuntu, the most
disappointing was SuSE. Not only did it seem deficient in
applications, but it did not recognize my Centrino wifi installed on
the laptop.

Knoppix was a very robust OS. So much, in fact, that it gave me too
many options, if such a thing is possible. The live CD version dug
right in and found everything on my laptop, then had it up and
running effortlessly. My biggest two complaints about this OS are
its vastness of options, which may make it hard to learn, and the
darkness of the screen. It did not take advantage of the "bright"
feature on Toshiba laptops.

By far, the most compatible was Ubuntu. It seemed to do everything
Knoppix did, but much more simply and more straight forward. In
addition, it used the "bright" feature previously mentioned. So, I
think this is the version I would like to test further.

With that in mind, I have several questions:

1. Can anyone tell me how to set up a dual boot?
2. There does not seem to be a lot of software out there, even
free, for the Linux operating system. How can I find it?
3. Do you have to install software for your particular version of
Linux or will all software labeled "Linux" run?

Again, thanks to all of you on this forum for your help.

Incidentally, my wifi router is a Netgear WG311, if that is of any
help to those having trouble connecting.
