Obviously, Linux must have an unoccupied space to reside in.

If your Windows partition is currently occupying all of your hard drive,
there are Windows applications like PartitionMagic that can shrink the
Windows partition (assuming you have empty space in the partition), so
that you will then have unallocated space on the hard drive, into which
Linux can then be installed.

Adding a second hard drive for Linux is another option.

I have never used Ubuntu, but suspect that it will have 'auto' and
'advanced' installation paths, with the 'auto' path doing most
everything for you. Just make sure it does not automatically erase your
Windows partition(s).

Yes. There are password managers for Linux, and some of them are
multi-platform, with Windows versions of the same application.

If Linux and Windows both have access to the same data partition, then
by installing the Windows version on Windows, and the Linux version on
Linux, both operating systems should be able to access the same password
database.

This works with a lot of Open Source apps, that are multi-platform, like
Open Office.

I was surprised to see that Ubuntu installs w/o 'make'. If I were doing
this, I would make sure that I set up Ubuntu with the gcc compiler, all
libraries, 'make' and everything necessary to develop, compile, modify
C/C++ code.

A lot of really neat applications for Linux are simply not released as
binaries, and have to be built from source code. It's nice to have the
tools handy, just in case you decide to play with them.
